About the maker

Gary Janchenko

Gary works in the hot shop in Columbus, Ohio, blowing vessels, bowls, and small pieces one at a time.

The Glass Gnu is his studio name. The faceted chihuahua echoes the way light breaks across the surface of a finished piece.

In the hot shop

From gather to annealer

  1. Gather

Molten glass is collected from the furnace on the end of a blowpipe.

  2. Shape

Breath, the marver, jacks, and wet newspaper bring the form out by hand.

  3. Anneal

Each piece cools slowly overnight in the annealer so it stays strong.
